When their father leaves with two strangers one evening, it changes the lives of Roberta, Peter, and Phyllis forever. They are forced to leave their comfortable London home and move to a small country cottage where their mother writes books to support them. Despite the changes, they soon grow to love the nearby railway and the kind Old Gentleman who rides on it. They become friends with the porter, Perks, and learn a lot about trains and more through him. Along the way, they have many exciting adventures and even save a train from disaster. With the help of the Old Gentleman, they also uncover the mystery of their father's disappearance and are overjoyed to be reunited as a family.
