Information - FAQ
The Apollo 11 mission necessitated two spacecraft: the Lunar Module (LM) and the Command Service Module (CSM). In order to make their historic landing, the two parts divided when they entered orbit around the moon. The LM descended, while the CSM stayed in orbit. Post-launch from the lunar surface, the LM's ascent stage then reunited with the orbiting CSM, allowing the astronauts to resume their journey in the main spacecraft and venture home. Despite its complexity, this feat was accomplished on July 20, 1969.
